Laurence Berlowitz Tarrant, Ph.D.
Chairman, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder
Dr. Tarrant has extensive experience commercializing medical technologies. As President of ITMA Ltd. he fostered technology transfer between Japan and the United States, resulting in the creation of five biomedical start-up companies.
As a consultant, Dr. Tarrant developed biomedical products for major medical companies such as Stryker Corporation and Nobelpharma. Prior to working as a consultant, Dr. Tarrant was Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Biology at Clark University. He has also held positions at New York University, State University of New York and the National Science Foundation. He is the inventor of multiple patents in biotechnology.
Dr. Tarrant received his Ph.D. in Developmental Genetics from University of California at Berkeley. He did postdoctoral work, with CH Waddington and Max Birnstiel at the University of Edinburgh, in Developmental Biochemistry. His undergraduate degree in Zoology is from the University of California at Berkeley.
F. Ken Andrews
President and Chief Executive Officer
Ken Andrews has general management, business development, marketing, sales, and clinical development experience across a broad range of
healthcare specialties, including tissue regeneration. He was most
recently Vice President of Marketing and Sales, and Chief Commercial
Officer at Alkermes. Previously, he was founding CEO at Medicalis
Corporation. Among his senior executive positions at biotechnology,
pharmaceutical and device companies, he was Vice President of
Marketing and Sales of the Tissue Repair Division of Genzyme
Corporation.
Mr. Andrews was Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at
Alteon Pharmaceuticals and Vice President of U.S.
Operations for Seikagaku Corporation. He began his career with
American Hospital Supply as a sales representative and rose in the
ranks to Director of Sales and Marketing. He helped lead the creation
of the initial sales and marketing organizations at both Genentech, Inc. and Centocor, Inc. He has also been a consultant with Synergy Partners, assessing new technologies and products in the life science
industry.
Mr. Andrews graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.A.
degree in business administration.
Richard C. Vaillant
Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Secretary
Richard Vaillant joined Histogenics in January of 2006, bringing 18 years of financial experience in the medical device industry. He was most recently Corporate Operations Controller and Director of Financial Planning & Control at American Cystoscope Makers Incorporated. Mr. Vaillant was an integral team member in improving operational and financial performance leading to a successful sale of American Cycstoscope in a $500 million deal with Gyrus.
Prior to American Cystoscope, Mr. Vaillant held increasing roles of scope and responsibility from Vice President of Finance & IT, Division Controller and Plant Controller. Mr. Vaillant was Division Controller, Systems Integration and Plant Controller of the Meditech and Meadox Divisions of Boston Scientific Corporation.
Mr. Vaillant received his B.S in Accounting through the Cooperative Education Program from Merrimack College.
Theresa Wingrove, Ph.D.
Vice President, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs
Dr. Wingrove joined Histogenics in late 2006, with over 15 years of experience in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and combination products. She was most recently Senior Director of Regulatory, and Clinical Affairs at MediSpectra, Inc. At MediSpectra, Dr. Wingrove led the clinical investigation of the LUMA optical cervical imaging system, an optical imaging device used in the detection of precancerous cervical lesions. She also directed the regulatory effort that culminated in PMA approval in March 2006. Prior to MediSpectra, Dr. Wingrove was Director of Regulatory and Clinical Affairs at Pfizer-Infusaid where she directed the clinical research programs in the US and in Europe for multiple drug/device combination products in the fields of diabetes, pain management and oncology.
Dr. Wingrove received her B.S. in biochemistry from Brown University and her Ph.D. in biochemical toxicology from the University of Rochester.
Sonya Shortkroff, Ph.D.
Director of Research
Prior to joining Histogenics in 2006, Dr. Shortkroff spent most of her career in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She brought to Histogenics a vast knowledge of articular joint biology and biochemistry as well as a strong interest in imaging techniques. Her work has included investigations into magnetic resonance imaging and optical coherence tomography imaging techniques and bio-molecular mechanisms in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, tissue engineering of cartilage, and biocompatibility of biomaterials for orthopedic devices.
She has enjoyed long-standing collaborations with the Departments of Rheumatology and Radiology at BWH and the Depts. of Nuclear Engineering and Chemical Engineering at MIT and recently with the Dept. of Biochemistry at Boston University. These collaborations have culminated in co-authorships of 44 peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. Shortkroff received her M.S. degree from Northeastern University and her Ph.D. from Bristol University, Bristol, UK.
